Construction of The New T1 is Now in Flight!

The busy summer travel season is taking off at San Diego International Airport (SAN), and we are making great strides on New T1 construction. Last month, crews installed the first structural steel for the new terminal. Progress can also be seen at the New T1 parking structure, where workers have poured the first layer of concrete.

In mid-July, construction crews are expected to start night work along eastbound North Harbor Drive. Sign up for the latest alerts here.

Summer Travel Tips

With the start of summer comes summer vacations! If your plans include air travel, here are some important tips for getting around SAN:

  • Secure your parking spot: Make a reservation at the Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or curbside valet here.
  • Arrive early: Arrive curbside at least two hours before your flight due to ongoing construction impacts at the airport. The busiest times curbside are from 4:00 a.m. to 6:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.
  • Use the San Diego Flyer: The free San Diego Flyer is a convenient electric shuttle bus service connecting the Old Town Transit Center and the airport. The buses operate seven days a week, with an average arrival time of every 20 to 30 minutes. The first pick up is at 4:45 a.m. and the last pick up/drop off is at 12:30 a.m.
  • Wait for the call: Picking up? The Cell Phone Lot in the Terminal 2 West Parking Lot on McCain Road is the perfect place to wait for your party. The lot is open from 5:00 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.
Prepare for your trip.

Shh...The Least Terns Are Nesting!

The airport’s annual avian residents landed earlier this year. California Least Terns migrate throughout the state, and since the 1970s, the birds have nested on the SAN airfield, which is a short flight to the numerous feeding options around San Diego Bay.

The Airport Authority collaborates with the San Diego Zoo in protecting these tiny seabirds and preparing their nesting spaces, including adding sand, crushed seashells and educating the public about this endangered species. Our construction teams have paused some work to allow ample space for the birds to nest until the season ends in September. Then, the chicks and new flying families will take flight and continue their journeys.

Serving as Water Stewards

Environmental stewardship is a hallmark of our airport operations and the New T1 will reflect our industry-leading commitment to sustainability through energy and water conservation. Since 2018, we have captured, treated, and reused more than 5 million gallons of stormwater. The captured stormwater has been used to help heat, ventilate, and air condition SAN’s terminals and jet bridges.

As a part of the New T1, a 1.5-million-gallon cistern is being built on the south side of the airport campus with projected completion in 2024. Capturing and reusing stormwater supports our Stormwater Management Plan, which aims to prevent, eliminate, and reduce the discharge of polluted stormwater into the surrounding environment and San Diego Bay.
