New Features
The New T1 will have upgraded amenities – including 11 new gates and more security checkpoints and gate-area seating than the current Terminal 1 – to provide a seamless and comfortable traveler experience. New restaurants and shops will ensure travelers experience a taste of San Diego and have an opportunity to purchase items needed for their trip. Additionally, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 will be connected post security eliminating the need for passengers to go in and out of security for connecting flights.
Improved Access
Getting to and from the airport is a big part of your journey. The New T1 will improve transportation and mobility with a new on-airport access road, bicycle lanes, and a pedestrian path, to reduce traffic and improve access to the airport. A new Parking Plaza will include up to 5,200 spaces, including some with EV charging. We’re also dedicating space right outside the terminals to provide a future direct connection to the region’s public transit network.
Enriching Art
We think building a new terminal is both an art and a science. That’s why we’ve curated a best-of-the-best design-build team, which includes internationally renowned artist James Carpenter, along with Turner-Flatiron and Gensler joint venture team. Together, this dream team is reimagining the New T1 building. We’ve also commissioned six artists to design spaces in the outdoor plazas, ticketing lobbies, and a family play area, so you can hang out and relax in style before you fly.
Your First Look at the New T1
From the moment you step out onto the curb, San Diego’s unique spirit will be captured in every aspect of the airport experience.

Financing Information
The Airport Authority negotiated a 10-year Airline Operating and Lease Agreement with airline partners that fully funds the New T1 and includes pre-approved funding for more than $500 million of transit and roadway improvements. The agreement was made possible thanks to a collaborative approach which ensured an outcome that met the needs of the airlines, Airport Authority, and the San Diego region.
